Topic: The Obesity Epidemic
Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates,
Obesity in the United States has been increasingly cited as a major health issue in recent decades. Of all countries, the United States has the highest rate of obesity. And according to 2007 statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States has the highest prevalence of overweight adults in the Anglo sphere. So it’s a huge problem for United States.
US have seen the seriousness of the issue and are taking action to respond to the issue. The American First Lady Michelle Obama is leading an initiative to combat childhood obesity entitled " Let's Move ". And also, in 2008, the state of Pennsylvania enacted a law, the "School Nutrition Policy Initiative," aimed at the elementary level. The results were a “50 percent drop in incidence of obesity and overweight”, as opposed to those individuals who were not part of the study.
To achieve the goal of decrease the number of obesity and overweight, other countries like Australia has taken actions to it. The current ALP government under Prime Minister Julia Gillard wants to tackle the obesity problem in Australia by giving tax subsidies, which would fund gym memberships to people who wish to lose weight. Her watchdog group, the National Preventative Health Taskforce, also wants to target childhood obesity by banning ads for junk food during the daytime when most children's television programs air.
Obesity is one of the most serious issues in United States since every year it even causes lots of death. US would like to reduce the amount of junk food in the country, and meanwhile, encourage citizens do more exercise and have a healthy life.
Topic: Development and Pollutions
Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates,
United States as one of the economically developed countries, we are now facing the issue that there is too much pollution around the country. The US is the second largest producer of Carbon dioxide and emissions. The US has less than 5% of the world’s population but 25% of the worlds CO2 and 30% of world waste. That’s a huge amount of pollution.
In order to reduce the pollution around the country and also protect the environment, the US has set up the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect human health and safeguard the natural environment.
Pollution is a worldwide issue. Many countries are responding to this issue actively. For instance, China has given a great response to the air pollution: some parts of China limit the use of cars according to the license plate number.
The United States has the ability to limit and control the pollution by using technologies without hurting our development. So the United States would like to have more expense on developing technologies to deal with the pollution, in order to achieve the common goal of the world, which is reduce the pollution and create a better environment.
